Why Manholes Block or Surcharge
A surcharging manhole, water rising up to or above the chamber cover, is usually a visible symptom of a problem elsewhere in the drain run, not the cause itself.
- A blockage further down the line: the manhole fills because something downstream is stopping the flow, often the actual cause is metres away. This is why clearing the visible overflow only solves half the problem, the water will back up again unless the actual blockage further along the run is found and cleared too. We always trace the cause rather than stopping once the immediate overflow is gone.
- Root ingress at a joint: a common cause of a chamber that surcharges repeatedly after rain, especially in older clay drainage.
